Summer is here and is it ever glorious! But when I fire up the grill it doesn’t mean the menu is all burgers. In fact, nothing makes the whole family happier than a great grilled, cheesy sandwich. Now, who’s got the first sno-cone?
So lets just take a moment to envision the peace that melting cheese brings. Because grilling in general may save me from heating up my house. But it doesn’t automatically save me the issues of finding that one meal that everyone is happy with. Especially when you may also celebrate the holiday away from home or visiting with family.
Enter my go-to for ensuring a great day, wonderful holiday, and happy bellies every time. And it only takes a quick trip to Walmart. And in the end, we’ll create an easy customization sandwich buffet for the grill. And really, what great spread isn’t complete without picnic tables and country plates?
So I picked up some fresh veggies in the Walmart produce section. Next we selected freshly sliced roasted chicken in the Deli as well as a ready-made Pistachio Fluff for dessert. I grabbed fully-cooked bacon and canned Country Time lemonade to round out our table. All while tossing our staple favorites like plain chips, mayo, butter, sliced provolone cheese, and BBQ sauce in the cart as well.
What is great about relying on these staples, is the versatility and easy prep they offer. Burgers can get old. But with this I can make up a traditional grilled cheese for one person. I can serve up a BBQ Chicken & Sweet Peppers for another. Or I can create a true 4th of July treat. A Red, White, Bacon & Blue Beefsteak Tomato Sandwich.
To try this yourself, you’re going to need the Kraft Roka Blue Cheese dressing and softened butter. Personally, a little blue cheese goes a long way for me. So blend in to your own taste, but overall you want smooth, blended mixture. I use 1 tbsp blue cheese dressing to 2 tbsp butter. Then thinly spread your roka blue butter on both sides of the bread.
A sheet of aluminum foil is necessary if you don’t have a baking sheet. Preheat the gas grill to 350°. Then place your bread down to brown. Once the first side is grilled, flip the bread over and begin building your sandwich.
And remember, the cheese is where it’s at. I started with a smokey provolone, which melts wonderfully. Then I added a spinach medley of fresh greens. Next were two slices of beefsteak tomato. Followed by 3 slices of Oscar Meyer precooked bacon. Top with one more slice of cheese and sandwich your slices together.
Once plated, I paired this up with a handful of wavy chips slathered in a Thick & Spicy barbecue sauce. All together this is a great dip for your chips. Its also a spicy compliment to the smokey bacon and provolone in this sandwich. Serve up to happy smiles with a cold can of lemonade.
Last but certainly not least. A special note on a great summertime treat we all love, sno cones! We have a special ice grinder for slushies and sno-cones. But word to the wise, you don’t have to use those heavy syrups to flavor your ice. One steady squirt from the new Kool-Aid Liquid {tiny bottle} is perfect for it!
Would you love to see even more great recipe ideas? Well for the love of summer, Kraft has created a great grilling cookbook. All to get your ready to fire up the grill and have fun!
