Irish coffee. You know there must be something amazing about it to create National Irish Coffee Day {January 25th}. Plus its the perfect after-dinner compliment when you’re done dining on corned-beef & cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day {March 17th}. And just like the leftovers from any celebration; I have to swear that relishing the last few drops of a great tradition get even sweeter in the weeks that follow.
I’m not talking about green beer here. For me, its sipping the brilliance of a well-made Irish Coffee. Because like anyone, we tend to get a wee bit more authentic during the holidays. And this year, we kicked our coffee cocktails up a notch by using Concannon Irish Whiskey. A unique whiskey, I was especially interested when I discovered that THIS whiskey is steeped in irish tradition. Uniquely matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and Concannon Petite Sirah wine barrels, the result is one smooth sipper with a lingering, earthy finish.
Learning that the original Irish Coffee made its debut in San Francisco’s The Buena Vista Café, I eagerly checked out their recipe. You can view it too with this YouTube video, “How to Make Irish Coffee with Concannon Irish Whiskey at The Buena Vista Cafe”. Honestly, I liked how simple they made each glass. When greeted with GOOD liquor you’ll want to taste those undertones and bold notes.
Needless to say, after seeing how The Buena Vista Café created a great Irish Coffee, I was eager to craft up my own! Using a 8 ounce glass mug, I tossed in two sugar cubes. Then I brewed a cup of Sumatra coffee on the “small mug” {6-oz} Keurig setting. For me the sugar had dissolved without stirring, so I then added a hearty shot of Concannon Irish Whiskey. I used my favorite canned heavy whipped cream to form a dollop of sweetness on top. Then sprinkled a mixture of grated chocolate, coffee beans, and sugar to finish.
And voila! The bold Sumatra coffee paired its herbal and earthy notes well with the smooth Concannon liquor. From start to finish, my Irish Coffee mixed and mellowed well. The lingering depth of the whiskey helped me savor each sip while the whipped cream provided that subtle sweet and satisfying finish. It was nice to discover a more cultured version of this coffee favorite. In the future, I’ll take the extra time to whip heavy cream for the top instead.
