Storms happen. I in fact, absolutely love a good thunderstorm. I marvel at cloud formations, am invigorated at the wind whipping up, and am awe-inspired at Mother Nature washing the world anew. And it was with this purpose that from the time my children were itty-bitty, that I’ve tried to instill that marvel in their minds as well.
We’ve pressed our noses against the window screens and swung on the front porch as the rain falls. And of course, what is a good storm without a special storm entertainment bag? In Michigan, I do have to note that while tornado’s do touch down, the worst we normally have to fear are the power outages. Well, that and the aspect of having to seek shelter in what is called “Michigan Basements“. {For the record they made about as much sense as a “Michigan Left“.} But I tell you one thing…you’re not really that fearful of the lightening and thunder after you’ve had to hunker down in one of those beauties for a few hours.
Which brings me back to the joy of weathering a good storm and not the fear of it. One such way we love to embrace them is with Duracell Coppertop batteries. And on a recent trip to Walmart, I was readily impressed with the aspect of Duracell’s Duralock 10-year guarantee. With Duracell, I don’t have to worry about the batteries when the lights go out. And I can count on my trusty go-to bag of fun when the kids naturally get a bit jittery in the heart of a big storm.
The best thing about creating your own storm kit, is that it can be as involved or as frugally fancy as you wish. And the secret to the success of mine, is {you may have guessed it} flashlights. So settle in, and see just how easy it is to gear your kids up for the next thunderstorm.
5 Ways To Keep Flashlights Fun
1. Stock up on small or hands-free lighting. If you have little ones, keep your hands busy with them and not holding your light source. Smaller flashlights fit better in tiny hands. This equals more comfort and the guarantee that I always have AA or AAA Duracell batteries around. And lets also mention that the kids will adore wearing a headlight that stays focused on what they are.
2. Make it educational! Storms often mean power surges in my neck of woods. Meaning just about everything needs to be unplugged. Work this into your storm kit by creating a treasure map or bingo game. March your troupe of storm hunters around the house and engage them in the ways to keep themselves {and the your home} safe.
3. Read books and get crafty. After we’ve passed out our lights and readied the house for the rain, now its time for some snuggles and art therapy. Flashlights give everything a new element of excitement. Even in the middle of the day, a good storm will darken the skies. Turn out the lights if need be, but shine some new light on favorite stories, coloring books, and art easels.
4. Snack and a show. Another great element of utilizing headlamps is that they are a natural spotlight. Embrace your inner comic or thespian and have the kids put on a show to {thundering} applause. Let me also note that breaking out the candy and eating ice cream out of the carton are also excellent ways to keep those kids happy.
5. Man the fort! Prop up the couch cushions, tent the blankets, or simply break out the pop-up castles. Another great way to pass the time {especially if that involves the hunkering down in the creepy basement aspect} is piling into your own private bunker. Flashlights aglow, this is a great way to keep kids from being overstimulated and feeling safe.
And there you have it. Keep it simple and savvy. Embrace the few hours that the wifi is down and you’re smartphones are on airplane mode to save the battery. Creating a traditions the kids look forward to, erases the terror often associated with heavy storms. And that, is simply great for the whole family to enjoy.
