To know me is to know I love coffee. And pretty much any reason to make, drink, or serve coffee. So you can bet when it comes to crafting up new holiday party recipes I can’t wait to see what I can stir up next.
Case in point? A new twist on an old favorite, Mexican hot cocoa. Mmmmm…I love a great hot cocoa. I love it even better when all that liquid chocolate has its been laced with espresso and cream.
And with early Christmas mornings comes the need for caffeine. {Lots of caffeine in my book.} So kick it up a few notches and keep it family friendly with this smoky chipotle twist from Tabasco. An iced or hot delight, it will start smooth and end with a smokey, spicy kick that will certainly keep you merry!
The secret to success with this recipe? Milk. It will be the factor that simmers your Tabasco sauce. Whether your hot cooca for this is homemade or a powdered version. Simply base it with milk and you’ll be set.
I personally love getting premixed cocoa powders. Just after the milk is warmed I whisk it in. Then I only heat it to steaming. Don’t boil your goods here. You don’t need it that hot and you could scald the milk {and taste} as well.
Once I’ve poured in about 4 ounces of hot cocoa, I get my espresso on. Save those boozy coffee drinks for later. On the side, mix up 2 shots of espresso with 4-1/2 ounces of half & half. {I buy the can of Doubleshot Espresso & Cream to keep it easy.} Once mixed, toss 1 ounce mixture into your hot cocoa mug.
Now its time to kick it up a few notches! Not only is Tabasco sauce a great for stuffing into stockings. But its also perfect for splashing into your mug! This is all about personal preference. I literally do one splash in a spoon and then stir it in. If your mixing this for the masses, one splash should be sufficient.
And voila! Top with your whipped cream, cinnamon, and sugar. Waiting until it melts to a foamy, bubbling exquisiteness is up you. Served hot, the milk and cream take the heat off the sauce leaving a great smoky afterburn. Served cold, the sauce will be a bit more noticeable, so use a touch less and pinch more sugar. Need this good for all ages? Brew up decaf espresso or use a chocolate milk.
No matter what. You’ll find this recipe and many party food tips that will be great for keeping your holidays hopping this year. How do you enjoy using Tabasco for spicing up your recipes?
