Guess what…I voted! And one thing is for certain, this is one race that I am not Undecided on! Plus there’s the whole vote-and-be-entered-to-win-$100,000 thing. Quite frankly I think M&M’s® chocolate candies are onto something. And the new flavors aren’t too shabby either.
For which there are THREE to M&M’s® peanut filled varieties to choose from:
I admit I was immediately partial. Because well, coffee! And I was pleasantly pleased at its nutty and light coffee flavor. Not to mention the great coffee scent I greedily inhaled after just opening up the bag.
And “inhaled” would be right about how fast they were gone too. At least the first bag. I slowed down for the second. Which, come to think of it, may be a good thing I only saw standard sized M&M’s® packages at my local Walmart. Some lucky ducks out there however can find larger bag sizes for sale.
But I give you fair warning…these limited edition flavors can be hard to find in stock. And once they’re gone…they’re gone. That is, unless you vote for your favorite flavor to stay on the shelves nationwide. Plus as I mentioned above, you could win big too! With a $100,000 cash prize as well as the title of the official M&M’s® Taste Tester, you want to get in on this!
And I not only got in on it, but I couldn’t wait to put the M&M’s® Coffee Nut in some pop tarts! I mean come on. Who wouldn’t immediately think these these coffee chocolatey goodness wouldn’t be supreme whipped into pastry and slathered with a coffee jelly glaze?
Because where I come from, its all about keeping it in the kitchen. And having fun. Which since I’m in such a confessional mood, let me also admit…I love being a messy baker. I even picked out my kitchen table for the fact that it can withstand my floured exploits.
And whether you choose to make your own dough or not…know that I do not. For it is far too easy right now for me to have it ready-made. To which I roll into submission after leaving it out of the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Pressed into shape, you’ll want a thickness of about 1/8″ inch. Then cut into rectangles.
And now its time for the filling! I grabbed 2 standard sized bags of M&M’s® Coffee Nut candies and blended to a chunky consistency. Then you’ll need to grab your chunky peanut butter.
Spoon in hand, I used about 1/2 cup peanut butter. This all folded it into the blended candy. Peanut butter as a whole will liquefy when heated, so I added candy until it held a firmer consistency. Plus, the whole point is taking the coffee flavor right?
Placed on parchment, I brushed on an egg wash to act as a “glue” for later pressing my two halves together. Then using a standard cookie scoop, proceeded to dole out my filling.
And here’s where it gets real. I don’t go for perfect pastries. The best eats from my Gran’s kitchen were the goodies she whipped effortlessly together. They were forked, pricked, oozing, crusted, and yes, even burnt. And they were heavenly.
So simply layer on your top dough, and gently press the ends together. Then grab a fork to notch your edging closed. Then place back in the refrigerator for a half hour. While you’re waiting, you can preheat your oven to 350°.
When your timer goes off, bake your homemade pop tarts for 20-25 minutes. You’ll want them to be golden brown. This before you slather them in your preferred glaze. For mine, I couldn’t resist a coffee jelly glaze. Which melted to a dark brown perfection on the hot pop tarts. I then sprinkled the top with sugar. And placed them back in the warm oven for 2-3 minutes.
When removed the second time, I sprinkled a bit more sugar and allowed the pop tarts to cool on a wire rack. Because the jelly glaze will make these sticky. Warm from the oven, these are meant to be devoured. However it would be easy to save, just make sure to only glaze the top when ready to eat.
